@lanesteele240
i had a shotgun at age 8. it depends on good supervision.
luv the music
@lanesteele240 Agree with rstutton's answer below. Also, wanna see a 9 yr old that got totally involved and took it a step further? search "does weight distribution effect speed of a pinewood derby car?"
We hit it off so well after another visit busizz4me.info
@joeghatta - I just noticed that the music information is listed below the video - it says "Various Artists - Arnhem Lan" and there is a link to download the music! Cool.
@joeghatta - thanks. Actually, I didn't choose the music, my original choice was removed by the Google copyright police - and it was replaced by some no-name copyright-free music.
Well done... What is the name of this music? Very nice choice...
@moter3d Are you sure it wasn't your finger.
Another great asset to polished axels is graphite powder!
Great Vid.
In the past I didn't let my scouts use cutting tools but I did lhave them polish.
We did similar to your video but use diamond files. All sanding is done with wet paper.
As a final step in polishing I use a white polishing paste. I chuck up the axles in a drill press and spin them while we use a Dermil with a cloth polishing pad. They shine like mirrors.
I hold a clinic at my house to help kids/dads without tools. I reccomend this to other leaders as well
Cool I use the same kind of sand paper but my car has glued wood axles with screws to hold the wheels and i polish the screw to make the wheels spin faster.

My thoughts on this are that the Pinewood Derby is primarily an activity for both Father and son - no one expects the scout build the car unassisted and likewise it shouldn't be done just by dad. However, how much the son contributes depends on experience and maturity and the father's judgement and hopefully the son will enter in more than one year and do more the second time.
This is why the results really aren't too important.
A mounted Dremel under supervision is a good intro to power tools.
@UberCon
I work with my grandson making his cars. He designs them, I make the design fit the block of pine. He cuts the block of pine. I am there beside him to help him use tools he is not allowed to use unless I am there with him. I will do what work I know he is unable to do. He found this video. I have to the tools showed him how to do it on one helped him on the 2nd the last two he did on his own.
no cub is mature enough to work with power tools. one laps of judgment and LOOP!!!! he will be afraid of tools forever. most boy scouts lack the skills to work with tools,
Ok, I laughed at that moter3d - I know I overdid it - but I can live with it :-)
I got something in my eye....I am gonna sue now..you should have had a safety glass warning
I like to work on these with my son. We watch videos like this to help us. I show him how to do it on the first one and then he does the rest. I agree that the parent should not do all the work. This video helped us think out of the box.
Excellent although I agree with the others, in a much more respectful tone, that the kids should be the only ones making the thing.
This is how the 8 year olds learn stuff, by watching their Dads. Last year, in our pack, the worst built, thrown together car, won overall. Go figure.
This is exactly what my seven year old Cub Scout would think about doing. The Pinewood Derby cars should all be built by the cubs during their weekly den meetings and dad's should stay out of it.
this and wafered wheels (if that's still legal, i remember it being a gray area) would decimate all.
I appreciate seeing how you put the sand paper over the file. I always did it by holding it in my hand (with a leather glove). Gets hot and wears out my way - I'll try yours this year!
Great job! Thanks for taking the time to post.
